The Sweetest Taboo
Crowded House, Sting, Annie Lennox, and Cyndi Lauper, Whitney Houston — these are the singers (and their songs) that inspired Katie Noonan to pursue a musical career. On this eclectic compilation, Noonan is joined by four of Australia’s finest jazz musicians, Zac Hurren (saxophones), Sam Keevers (piano), Phil Stack (double bass), and Evan Mannell (drums) — her stellar band. Highlights include a delicious version of 1927’s, If I Could, Billy Joel’s, Just The Way You Are re-invented with a new bolero beat, and a gentle interpretation of Whitney Houston’s, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, which really works. This is a collection of modern poetry and jazz music. Perhaps it’s the only genre large enough and with cerebral integrity for Noonan’s voice to be truly heard and understood. Throughout, Noonan takes flight and spreads her wings gloriously towards the stars.
