Megacle competes in the Olympic Games, disguised as his friend Lycidas. Megacle and Lycidas are in love with Aristea, the daughter of King Clistene, whose hand in marriage is the prize. Disguised as a shepherdess, Princess Argene arrives, determined to win the hand of Lycidas, to whom she was previously betrothed.  After winning the games, Megacle confesses the deception to Aristea and leaves, broken-hearted. Lycidas claims Aristea. The tutor Aminta brings news that Megacle has thrown himself into the sea. Aristea then tries to throw herself into the sea in her grief at losing Megacle but is prevented by Argene. Megacle is rescued by a fisherman. Lycidas plots the assassination of the King and is condemned to death for his treason. Argene offers herself in his place, producing a necklace given to her by Lycidas as proof of her royal birth. Clisthene recognises the necklace as one that belonged to his abandoned son. So Lycidas and Aristea are brother and sister. As the match is now unthinkable, Lycidas takes Argene as his bride and Megacle and Aristea marry as well.
